Tempera Paint: Pet Safe?
Hi. I just recently started painting and decided to go with temperas. I found mine at Hobby Lobby and they are manufactured by Rich Art. The label states the paints are “brilliant, opaque, non-toxic WATER COLOR.”
I have two free-roaming cats and no space in which to create a separate room for my painting. The cats don’t seem interested in my paints to the point of even sniffing, but I’d like to know, with the exception of their directly consuming the temperas (as I never leave the paints unattended), if these can generally be considered “pet safe” paints? If not, what other paints might be deemed as such?
The principle ingredients are listed as: Water, calcium carbonate, clay, starch, attapulgite, non-toxic pigments.

heh heh… I have a friend who does egg-tempera and her cat licked one of her paintings clean away…
but that’s different from what you’re using – those ingredients won’t hurt your cats even if they do chew ‘em up. My toddler actually ate a cake of tempera paint and I didn’t know until I changed her diaper…. “What the!!! It’s FLUORESCENT GREEN!” She’s 21 now, no ill effects!
That’s about the safest thing you can use – anything artist-grade will contain pigments that may be harmful if digested, even if they are rated non-toxic “under normal use”.
